How we tested
We tested 9 VPNs in August 2026 from a residential connection in Europe, using a wired gigabit line. Each service was tested 3 times at off-peak hours on the same server city (London and New York), and we averaged the results. We also read the privacy policy and logging sections of each provider — yes, the actual documents, not the marketing page.

Speed results, explained
Speeds above are peak results on a gigabit line. On a typical 100 Mbps home connection, every service on this list will saturate your line — speed differences only matter on fiber or when downloading large files. If your connection is under 100 Mbps, buy on price and privacy, not speed.
Privacy: what actually matters
- Jurisdiction: all top-5 providers are outside the US or have proven no-log audits. Mullvad is Swedish, Proton is Swiss, Surfshark is Dutch.
- Audits: look for an independent audit of the no-log policy (e.g. from Deloitte or Cure53). Both Proton and Surfshark publish them.
- Payment: Mullvad doesn't require an email. For anonymous payments, also look at cash/crypto options (Mullvad and NordVPN support crypto).
- RAM-only servers: several providers now run RAM-only servers that wipe data on restart. Proton and Surfshark both do this on most locations.
Price vs value
The biggest trap in VPN pricing is the auto-renewal jump. Almost every provider doubles the price after the first term. Before subscribing, set a calendar reminder one month before renewal, and re-evaluate.
